Every child won’t win a Nobel Prize, but we can help every child reach their full potential! Play is an important part of cognitive development!
As you are shopping for children this season (or anytime), consider classic toys! This Nobel Prize winner mentioned erector sets in his acceptance speech! There is a lot of research to support the importance of creative play! Remember when Legos were sold in large tubs without specific directions? What about TinkerToys? Have you ever played Mastermind? On rainy and cold days, we played strategy games, built indoor villages, and found other creative ways to have fun! We also read great books. We played outside when possible, and most of our outside games did not require toys. We did love pogo sticks, stilts, and bicycles!
We know the research on screen time and social media, especially for children.
When you are choosing a gift, consider a gifts that allow for creative play (outdoor or indoor), build critical thinking, or both! This is a challenging year for everyone. If you are frugal in shopping, Play-Doh is a great idea! Did you know you can even make your own?
Some of my favorite strategy games are listed on our resource page! Here is a link to TinkerToys. Also, although I have not seen this STEM toy building kit in person, it allows for creative play, has many types of pieces for building, has good ratings, and is 40% off! If you try it, please share a comment!
